Hampi, Karnataka

Hampi, Karnataka (India)

Situated in the rocky terrains of Karnataka, the historic sites of Hampi and Kamalapur unveil not only tales of a bygone era but also a thriving destination for avian enthusiasts. These UNESCO World Heritage sites, dotted with ancient ruins and boulders, offer a unique backdrop for birding against the rich history of the Vijayanagara Empire.

One can spot a variety of birds from the vibrant sunbirds, larks, sand grouses, spurfowls, quails, lapwings, shrikes, bulbuls to the soaring raptors amidst the majestic ruins and The Tungabhadra River. The special attractions are the Indian Eagle Owls that find shelter in the crevices, the Yellow-throated Bulbul found near the rocky boulders of Matanga Hill and the Painted Sand grouses along the canal road.

The Tungabhadra River, flowing gently through the region, adds another dimension to the birding experience. Kingfishers, herons, and waterfowl grace the riverbanks, offering birdwatchers a serene setting to observe both aquatic and terrestrial avian life.

A trip to Hampi offers a very unique experience which is both culturally enriching and naturally captivating, a place I would love to go back to, over and over again!
