Coastal Karnataka's avian life weaves a vibrant narrative along the shores, mangroves, and estuaries, forming an integral part of the region's environmental mosaic. Mangrove-lined estuaries, such as those in Udupi and Karwar, serve as crucial habitats for various waterfowl, waders, and shorebirds.

The coastal cliffs and rocky outcrops of places like Gokarna become bustling colonies for seabirds during the breeding season.

The dense mangrove forests along riverbanks provide shelter to a myriad of avian species such as the kingfishers, pittas and fish eagles to name a few.

The sandy shores attract shorebirds such as sand plovers, stints, sandpipers, gulls and terns. The proximity to the Western Ghats introduces an additional layer of diversity. The Malabar Pied Hornbill and the Malabar Trogon, emblematic of the Western Ghats, make occasional appearances in the coastal hinterlands.
